Personal Interests

Here is some personal information and a list of websites, useful and otherwise. Also, try a bit of philosophy.

"It just shows what can be done by taking a little trouble," said Eeyore. "Do you see, Pooh? Do you see, Piglet? Brains first and then Hard Work...."
In Which A House Is Built at Pooh Corner for Eeyore, from The House at Pooh Corner, A. A. Milne.

For mathematics students:

Don't just read it; fight it! Ask your own questions, look for your own examples, discover your own proofs. Is the hypothesis necessary? Is the converse true? What happens in the classical special case? What about the degenerate cases? Where does the proof use the hypothesis?
Paul Halmos, I Want to be a Mathematician

For all students:

Culture is activity of thought, and receptiveness to beauty and humane feeling.... A merely well-informed man is the most useless bore on God's earth.
Alfred North Whitehead, Aims of Education and Other Essays (1929)

For teachers:

Teaching is the communication of the process of investigation rather than a listing of ideas--not a new idea, not a complicated idea, but a widely ignored one nonetheless.
Roger L. Welsch, "Mock Apple Pie: The Conventional Teacher in an Unconventional Educational Program"
