My shib test IdP is up and running.. There was something that needed the actual shibboleth-idp dir to be located under /usr/local/ so once installed there everything worked out fine.
I also know how to config the AD part of the puzzle now.. the values that need to be changed are within shibboleth-idp/etc/resolver.ldap.xml still looking at what exactly needs to be configured to make the idp use that file rather than or in addition to the resolver.xml file.
