LBST 499: Ethnic Music and Culture      ASSIGNMENTS

Week 10

On paper, please turn in a brief outline of your term paper, so I can see how you are progressing.

What are the main points you’ve studied?   What have you learned?

Week 8

Please read Chapter 5, “American Indian Musical Cultures” this week.

Week 6 Assignment 6  Bibliography:

You should visit the library to find books, journal articles and other scholarly publications, and search the Web for items pertinent to your topic.  Please turn in on paper three or four items that you have found on your topic.  Use proper bibliographical citations, followed by a brief annotation telling in your own words how each item pertains to your topic.

Week 5 Assignment   Answer with “Turn in Assignments” on WebCT.  Please start with your name, then Week 5.

Please read Chapter 3 of the Koskoff textbook.  Describe your own musical and social identity.  What factors have shaped your identity?

Week 3

This week you should write the proposal for your term paper.  This is to be on paper and turned in at the next class period.

Please read the handout on “Guide to the Term Paper.”  I’m looking for two things:  1. The type of music you will study.  This can be any type of music that interests you.  2. The specific aspects you will study about this music.  This can be history, style, behavioral aspects, etc.   You can be creative and “think out of the box.”   Don’t just try to do something that you think I would like.   Your term paper is for you.   It should be fun.   Your proposal will help me to work individually with you on what you would like to learn.

Assignment 2

Read Rahkonen’s article on music communication (1983), and write a brief response.  Is he right about music communication?  Does music communicate in some other way?

Assignment 1

Taking into consideration the topics from the first class period (music you like, music you dislike, the definition of music, and ethnomusicology), write a couple of sentences about what would YOU would like to learn from this course.
