Program Chairs: Judy Taylor (AMS-Allegheny) and Carl
Rahkonen (SEM-Niagara)
Local Arrangements: Carl Rahkonen and Matt Baumer
For the second time, the Niagara
and Allegheny chapters will meet together at IUP. We have an exciting slate of papers representing
a considerable diversity of approaches to studying music. Joint sessions will be held Friday afternoon
and Saturday morning, with separate sessions for SEM and AMS on Saturday
afternoon. Bruno Nettl will deliver the
plenary address, “Return to the Heartlands,” on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. See the detailed preliminary
program.
There is no
registration fee for the conference.
Lodging
Several hotels of essentially the same quality are available
in Indiana.
Two are on the Oakland Rd.
corridor (see below for directions) – the Comfort Inn (1350 Indian Springs Rd, 724-465-7000),
where Dr. Nettl will be staying, has a special rate of $93.15 until March 23;
ask for the “music conference” rate. The Super 8 (111
Plaza Rd, 724-349-4600) offers a special rate of $72.99, also only
until the 23rd. Three more hotels are on Wayne Avenue – the Best Western
University Inn (1545 Wayne Avenue,
724-349-9620), has an IUP rate of $65 for a single, $70 for a double and
includes a hot breakfast bar. Other
options are the Holiday Inn (1395
Wayne Ave., 724-463-3561, $109), or the Scotts Motel (very
spartan, $47.96 single, $58.80 double, 1411 Wayne Ave., 724-465-5571).
Meals
If you
would like to join us for dinner with Bruno Nettl on Friday evening, we
have reserved space at a local restaurant, Benjamin’s (458 Philadelphia St.). Entrées range from
$10-25, and the restaurant has a full bar and wine list.
Lunch on Saturday: Attendees have
the option of a deli sandwich buffet in the Oak Room of Foster Dining Hall,
which is very convenient to Cogswell Hall.
The cost is $7.50, payable at the conference.
Since
we need a count for both the restaurant and the lunch, if you would like to
join us for either event, please email Matt Baumer (mbaumer@iup.edu) by Friday, March 23.
Friday Evening Concert
The Indiana Brass Band will
perform in Gorell Hall at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. One of Indiana’s musical
treasures, the Indiana Brass Band performs in period dress on restored
instruments from the 1830s-50s, including Kent bugles, quinticlavs,
ophicleides, cornopeans, trombones, natural and piston horns, and
percussion. The band will also perform
on saxhorns from the 1860s. There is no admission charge for the concert.
Driving Directions (IUP
Campus Map)
The
main roads into Indiana are Rt. 422 (E-W), Rt.
119 (N-S, connects with Rt. 22 to Pittsburgh and
points W or SW) and Rt. 286 (back road to Pittsburgh).
If you’re staying at the Holiday Inn, Best Western, or Scotts Motel,
take the Wayne Ave.
exit from 119; the hotels are all on the right.
To reach campus, turn right from the hotel and continue into town to Rose St. Turn left and go up and around the hill past
an IUP archway to Oakland Ave
(Rt. 286). Turn right and follow Oakland until you see
another IUP arch at the bottom of the hill. Proceed through that intersection
and take the next right (a 45-degree turn) on Grant St. The parking garage is on the
left (see “parking” below). Otherwise,
continue to the top of the hill and turn left on 11th St.; Cogswell is the
second building on the left. DiCicco
Rehearsal Hall (room 121) occupies the front right corner as you face the the
building from 11th St. If you are staying at the Comfort Inn or
Super 8, take the Oakland Ave.
exit from Rt. 422. For the Super 8, turn
left at the next light (the Wal-Mart plaza).
Otherwise, continue into town; the Comfort Inn is on the right behind
the Eat & Park at the next major intersection. Follow the above directions from Oakland Ave.
Parking
Because of construction at IUP
parking is tight on Friday afternoons.
For those staying at the hotels, we have arranged a shuttle van to take
you to Cogswell on Friday only. You can
leave your car at the hotel and the van will pick you up between 1:15 and 1:45
on Friday, transport you to dinner at Benjamin’s, and return you to the hotel
after the concert (or before as needed).
Please send an email to mbaumer@iup.edu
if you would like to use this service or use the enclosed reply form.
If you wish to park at IUP, use the
garage on Grant St.,
halfway up the hill. After you park, remember your space number and proceed to
the third level. Be aware that spaces beyond a certain point in the deck are
reserved 24/7. There is a small charge for parking on Friday until 5:00 p.m.;
pay the machine on the third level of the garage for the hours remaining until
5. Parking is free after 5 and on
Saturday. Go across the pedestrian
bridge and around to the front of Cogswell on the left. If the garage is full, proceed up the hill,
left on 11th, then right into the parking lot; if that’s full keep
going on South Drive
around and down the hill to Pratt
Dr. There
are metered spaces along Pratt, or go left on Pratt, around the corner, and
left into the HUB parking lot (see campus
map).
We look forward to seeing you at
the conference!
