Introduction

This section is developed to introduce the resources about Sociolinguistics and Gender.
If you are especially interested in female language acquisition, speech behaviors between man and woman, and gender language variation, you can find both interesting and educational sources here.

The sites include many fascinating sources such as online journals which you can access free, hundreds of bibliography with annotations and research papers dealing with theoretical and methodological issues.

Asian EFL Journal

This online journal deals with teaching and learning English in Asia.
Especially, the journal of June in 2003 covers the importance of choosing textbook
regarding the portrayal of gender in the targeted culture.   

A Bibliography of Japanese Sociolinguistics in English

It has works on Japanese sociolinguistics and related fields such as
second language acquisition and communication.  30 articles on gender,
79 on general sociolinguistics and 48 on politeness are also introduced.

A Content Analysis of Gender in Dictionary

Through the research, the article provides ideas which have not been noticed
within the field of sociolinguistics. The finding is that masculine pronouns outnumber
feminine pronouns significantly in the example sentences.

Feminism & Psychology

The papers deal with high-quality theoretical and empirical one and
represent feminist voices which have been under-represented in psychology journals.

Final Report to the Leverhulme Trust

This is a sociophonetic investigation on accent change in the city
of Glaswegian. The research provides a quantitative and qualitative
account of accent change with data from a Scottish context. It shows
an extension of the use of acoustic analysis as a research tool in sociolinguistic research.

Gender and Discourse               

This is anthology of eleven articles with 3 sections: “1) general theoretical
perspectives on gender and discourse; 2) studies of language and
behavior in particular institutional settings; 3) articles that examine gender
and discourse in the everyday world.”

Gender and Genre Bibliography

This is bibliography of two major sections. In general works and collection,
the books about feminist, gender, and language are mainly introduced,
and in specific genres, 43 thematic sections such as political language,
lesbian/gay talk and classroom talk are introduced. 

Gender and Linguistic Stereotyping

The research has shown that women are at a disadvantage linguistically and socially.
A set of female forms of speech was specially introduced for the understanding
of stereotyping female language. Also an issue whether women should change
their speech pattern in order to fit in a male norm was raised.

Gender, Myth & Mythmaking

This is webpage of International conference held 14th-15th, 2004 in the

about gender, myth & mythmaking are listed with interesting topics
such as “Gaotang: the Lost Goddess of Love and Beauty in Ancient China."

Gender, Status and Power in Discourse Behavior of Men and Women

The author seeks the answer for the question whether women and men talk
differently and if so, whether the differences are related to gender, status and power.
The author describes some linguistic variables of woman such as question-tags
and interruptions. The finding for this research is that “gender and status rather
than gender or status will be the determinant categories.”

The Handbook of Language and Gender

As one of book series in Blackwell publishing company, this book is organized
with four parts of 24 articles with different voices and views: 1) History and Theoretical
Background to the Study of Language and Gender; 2) Negotiating Relations;
3) Authenticity and Place; 4)
Stereotypes and Norms.

Language, Gender, and Society

This is an introduction of the course “Language, Gender, and Society” opened at
Central European University. This program was originally developed for university teachers,
advanced Ph.D. students, researchers and professional in the social sciences and humanities.
Especially selected supplemental readings of the course provide insightful information.

Language Politics

This is bibliography on sociolinguistics with the section of gender and
its difference in language. More than 30 articles are listed with annotations.

Majorie Chan’s Chinese language and Gender on-line Bibliography

The bibliography has three parts: Chinese Linguistics, General Linguistics,
and Chinese Women and Gender. Especially, in the section of Chinese Women
and Gender, the publications of scholars from history, literature, anthropology,
sociology and women studies and references from the past works were included.

Politeness and Gender

It is said that “women use more polite speech than do men, a high frequency of
honorific, and softening devices such as hedges and questions.” On this matter,
the author explains that it is socially conditioned attitude toward man and woman.     

Reading Suggestions on Sociolinguistics

The Role of Gender in New Zealand Literature

Females use language that gave their writing a more interpersonal and socioemotional tone.

A Sociolinguistic Study of Gender Differences in Mosuli Arabic

This is the sociolinguistic symposium held by UK-based sociolinguists. It discusses
theoretical and methodological issues concerning language including gender in society.
It also provides numerous papers and posters.

Sociolinguistic Variation in American Sign Language

The book written by Ceil Lucas provides useful examples and analysis for sign
language linguistics. It also would do well as a source for graduate and advanced
undergraduate courses where materials beyond a primer of sociolinguistics are needed.

Thoughts on Gender Styles in Communication

After researching the given topic, the author established theories on gender
styles in tandem with an analysis of her own field study. She also analyzed
four plays and a short story for gendered speech characteristics.

Towards an Overview of Work on Gender and Language Variation

More than 400 articles on gender and language are introduced with
commentaries according to each period: Early statements on gender and
language, work after 1900, work during the 1970’s, the early 1980’s, work after 1985, t
he 90’s and the outlook for the future.
