My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is based on the works of Bakhtin, Burke, and Vygotsky who believe that learning takes place through social interaction. For this reason, I believe in active in-class discussion. As ESL teacher, I also believe in students’ autonomy. I should give enough space and freedom to my students to contribute equally in knowledge construction. They should participate equally in decision making process. They should be allowed to discover their strengths and weaknesses so that they utilize their strengths and work on their weaknesses. I should facilitate and foster students to engage constructively in classroom discussion. Discussion may be executed in groups, pairs or whole class participation. As a guide, I should always be present to help my students to find their own ways of learning. I believe I should provide options and give them awareness about many possible ways of personal development and grooming. I feel that if students are given more options and allowed to determine what work they feel is most important, in the end they will likely produce better-quality work. My students should never feel threaten and underestimated in any enterprise executed in the class. It does not mean that the atmosphere should not be challenging. They should feel the challenge and accept it bravely.
