English 202 Spring 2004 - Research Writing |
||
1. What's a Blog? "Blog" is short for web log, a kind of running personal bulletin board on the world wide web. You've probably read others' blogs before, even if you didn't realize it. They are an easy way to place materials on the web. Click here to see a sample.
2. How will we use it? We'll follow the general suggestion of the Bedford -- to keep a regular (at least weekly) log of research activities. This will include summary of the work you've done (looked for x, identified y, contacted z...) as well as your reflections on your research question. (Your sense of the question may change, split into multiple questions, etc. as you explore. The log will be a means of tracking this development.
3. How do I get started?
A service called Blogspot will allow you to create your research blog. You'll simply go to this site, following the directions to set up your blog. Make sure you record the username/password and blog name you ultimately select. If you loose it... the IUP helpdesk won't be able to help you.
4. What name should I choose? Since we'll both need to consult your
log over the course of the semester, I'll ask that you follow the simple
formula to name your BLOG: So if I were a student, mine would be:
And the whole web address for visiting my blog would become http://iupengl202-SherwoodKenneth.blogspot.com
5. What do I do next?
When you have successfully created a your blog, you shoot write an introductory post. Make sure you have created the right address, using your "official name"--which is what I will look for to find your blog! Tonight, you should post your first substantive entry--in which you brainstorm about a possible "everyday" research topic. |
