Response Question 5 - The Awakening, Kate Chopin
Having read the turn-of-the-century novella, by Kate Chopin, consider the way this text represents the social world of Edna Pontillier. What "social understandings" about appropriate behavior and aspirations for women does the text present? How and why does Edna become aware of these expectations and begin to have difficulty with them? What "kinds of behavior" does Edna's awakening open her up to? Does the novel ultimately present a solution to the dilemnas it presents?
