This course will cover the fundamentals of English Grammar (parts of speech, phrases, clauses, sentence construction), strengthening familiar concepts and deepening students' understanding of grammatical structure. The multipart aim will include analysis, usage, and application; students should expect to learn: 1) how to take apart sentences; 2) how to apply structural knowledge in the formation of sentences that abide by the conventions of Standard English usage; and 3) to reflect analytically and historically on the origins, logic, consistency, and consequences of standard written English. Grammar exercises, practical editing, and informal writing will be assigned.
