Source Use

"The Most Dangerous Job," Chapter 8 of Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, is divided into six different subsections, each a kind of self-contained mini-chapter.  Schlosser uses these subsections as a way to visually organize and compartmentalize his treatment of a defined aspect of his subject. Does the research material integrated into each section appear to be similarly grouped and organized? If it is, Schlosser can provide a useful model for your own writing as you work to integrate, synthesize or, if you prefer "digest" your research.

Working with a group of classmates on one of the six subsections of the chapter, reread the section and note "facts" (informational elements for which he should cite a source in the end notes) that are clearly products of research.

1. In a new MS Word file, have the group leader list fifteen to twenty of these facts in sentence form. You don't need to quote exactly

2.Cutting and pasting, arrange the "facts" into three to five coherent groupings.

3. Above each group, in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, write a sentence that expresses the theme or principle of coherence of each group.

4. Reread the sentences you have written (3, 4, or 5) and try to distill them into one summary sentence. ***TYPE THIS AT THE TOP OF YOUR PAGE MARKED SO***

5. Post this to webct and be prepared to discuss whether or not the "theme" you derrived by identifying and distilling the researched "facts" corresponds with the overall topic of the subsection.
